Not everyone needs a Dual Initiator Coupler Kit but for those who do there is no substitute. Blue Force Gear was approached last year by a USASOC Breacher who had a problem to solve. Reliable dual initiation of explosive charges using the M81 Igniter, Time Blasting Fuse with Shock Tube Capability. His expertise coupled with the engineering prowess of the BFG Product Development team resulted in the birth of the Dual Initiator Coupler Kit (D.I.C.K.).

He recounted to our team his meticulous process of unboxing and taping M81’s together in pairs and his method to ensure that the pull rings would maintain the proper orientation without the igniters rotating when stored. He was also using parts of the weatherproofing plug to maintain spacing between the igniters to prevent them from binding on each other. A crucial but difficult step to consistently replicate. This process, refined through numerous hours of training rotations and experimentation, was a one-off development project with no standardization or repeatability. At BFG, our motto is “Always Better” and we knew that we could apply it here.

The Dual Initiator Coupler Kit easily hinges open to accept two M81 Initiators and securely holds them in place while the internal ribbing prevents the igniters from rotating once the Dual Initiator Coupler Kit is closed and secured. The design allows the igniters to be separated after assembly if desired and the glass reinforced Nylon 66 construction and Velcro One Wrap securing band is both more durable and more weather resistant than the improvised tape method. A small example of the intersection of operational experience and engineering excellence is the added detail of routing the One Wrap with the hook facing out which allows the user to slap their Dual Initiator Coupler Kit onto any available loop field on their kit in case they need to temporarily take their hands off their Dual Initiator Coupler Kit. Lastly, a small loop is sewn into the One Wrap to capture the safety pin pull strings to prevent snagging. No one wants their Dual Initiator Coupler Kit to go off prematurely.
