The GMT Sling: Redefining The Tailed Rifle Sling

The GMT Sling®: Redefining The Tailed Rifle Sling

Always Better | June 8th, 2024

Blue Force Gear once again revolutionized the sling industry by designing a tailed rifle sling that’s far superior to any legacy model. The GMT Sling addressed the deficiencies found in legacy tail sling designs for those who prefer a non-captured tail setup. Even though the tailless rifle sling Vickers Slings stole the market shortly after its release as the most reliable two-point sling, certain agencies are ingrained that a tailed sling is necessary. After BFG received countless requests from important friends to design a better “mousetrap,” they accepted the challenge, and the GMT Sling was born.

Superior Webbing Material

The GMT Sling, which stands for “Give Me Tail,” was built upon the success of the captured tail design of the Vickers Sling. BFG has used quality materials since day one, an automatic and easy upgrade over legacy tailed slings which typically employ thin, inferior webbing that wears out extremely fast – especially when using a teethed adjuster.

On these alternative designs, the strap portion that interfaces with the adjustment piece gets stripped and frayed from the adjuster. The legacy models use flimsy webbing that cannot hold up to the wear and tear of constant movement, thus limiting the lifecycle of the sling. The BFG adjuster also operates using tension instead of teeth, further protecting the sling material.

Recognizing the limitations of the thin, flat nylon used in legacy slings, BFG employed their proprietary solution-dyed CORDURA® nylon webbing for the GMT Sling. This webbing features increased "loft" (thickness and softness), making it comfortable against the user’s neck and shoulders while remaining less prone to snagging on other objects.

The thin, flat nylon used in legacy tail slings is notorious for finding its way into the worst possible places, such as between the magazine and magwell, in front of the optic, around the barrel, in other worn gear, or even behind the trigger – a potential showstopper. BFG has meticulously selected the webbing material for the GMT Sling to reduce the chances of the free tail becoming a snag hazard. The folded double stitch design at the end of the tail also prevents it getting caught in small places.

The Double Locking Sling Adjuster

Fixing the webbing deficiency by selecting superior materials and using sewing tactics to elevate the design wasn’t as involved as innovating a completely new tailed sling adjuster. After over two years in development, this adjuster provides consistent tension when tightening and loosening the sling, ensuring it stays in place until intentionally adjusted. The custom double locking buckle interface was manufactured specifically for this application from durable and rust-free glass-filled nylon.

To tighten, simply pull on the tail; to loosen, grasp and pull the spherical release knob. A sewn-in stop at the end of the tail prevents the sling from coming apart and releasing your weapon. The round knob is significantly easier to locate under stress, in the cold, and while wearing gloves versus the less significant tab of legacy models. Its spherical shape keeps it from getting snagged or caught in places it shouldn’t be and provides an obvious point to grab, identify, and adjust.

Traditional tail slings suffer from some major drawbacks. They utilize metal adjustment buckles that are prone to rusting, breaking, and damaging other gear. These buckles often have springs that fail, rendering the sling useless. It’s also common for the adjusters to get snagged and loosen unintentionally or lock up completely if they get hit with mud or salt water. The revolutionary design of the GMT Sling adjuster solves all those problems. Once the adjuster is set, it won’t move unless the operator tells it to. Finally, a tailed sling that’s reliable.
